Pakhom is depicted to be a typical man who pursues only materialistic ambitions. He is an arrogant man who thinks that by being wealthy he can be fearless of the Devil himself. He is greedy as he keeps on thinking of having more land even though he has more than enough. He is selfish as at the end, he leaves his family behind to earn more money. He is also foolish as he kept on pushing himself to earn more and more without caring for his own well-being. He is also easily jealous as he gets jealous of his neighbor for buying fifty acres of land and also of the peasant-dealers who were getting more money and land than him.

Character Sketch of Pakhom’s wife


Pakhom’s wife is a proud and simple woman. She is happily content with her poor but stress-free peasant life. She sees the good even in her rough living conditions. For example, she points out that a peasant’s life is not so complicated and all they have to worry about is getting a good harvest. She is a wise person who knows that rich people have the most to lose, because one cannot gain something without losing something in return.
