Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute has been established by the govt of Puducherry as an autonomous institution of govt of Puducherry and is administered by a duly constituted governing body headed by Hon’ble Minister of Health, govt of Puducherry as the chairman and the Principal Secretary (Health) as the vice chairman

The Hospital is functioning in a separate building with 300 beds which is at present having ground + first floor and expansion is going on for further three storeys. There are four hostel blocks each consisting of 104 rooms with 19 bath attached rooms and 85 double rooms which can be used for single occupancy also. A separate mess is available for hostel students

The medical council of India has permitted to admit 150 students each year and the institute is affiliated to Pondicherry University which is a central university established under an act of parliament. The institute is having a very good library with 3000 books at present and subscribing 14 Indian journals and 8 foreign journals and 40 computer terminals with internet facility. The library will be shortly shifted to a separate 5 storeyed building A/c and the books and journals are to be increased in a phased manner

Out of the 150 students, 128 students are admitted purely on merit basis by the centralized admission committee (CENTAC), govt of Puducherry, based on the marks arrived at by adopting the method of normalization

The balance 22 seats are filled by the NRI/NRI sponsored/foreign students on merit basis adopting the method of normalization

Non Resident Indian (NRI): An NRI student is one who has a NRI status. Students who have studied their qualifying examination equivalent to 10+2 of India from schools or colleges abroad (outside India) will be considered as NRI student

NRI sponsored student: An NRI sponsored student is an Indian citizen whose direct blood relative (Parents, Grand parents, Direct brother/sister of parents or candidate) is an NRI

Foreign student: Students holding the passport issued by foreign countries including people of Indian origin who has acquired nationality of foreign countries is classified as foreign students. PIO card holders, OCI (dual citizens) are eligible for the above category

Eligibility to apply for MBBS course: Students must have completed and passed 10+2 examination under CBSE/ISC/state board syllabus with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany and Zoology) and English. Candidates who are applying for admission under the NRI/sponsorship/foreign student category should have successfully completed equivalent qualification prescribed for the local candidates for consideration for admission to this course and the qualification should be recognized by the Pondicherry University

NRI/Foreign students must have completed the 12th grade and secured a pass before the admission. A grade point average of 3 (on a scale of 1-4) or above that in the course subjects of Biology, Physics, Chemistry are preferred. Wherever all subjects grades like A, B-, C+ are used by the schools, appropriate equivalents in terms of percentage like 90%, 75% and 60% should be made available. Only students from high schools accredited by the respective state or the country is eligible for admission and the statement to this effect must be produced

Applicants from Cambridge University should possess a GEC advance level (A levels) in physics, chemistry and biology and pass in AS level in English course. 86-93 in class XII examinations

Age: Candidates should have completed 17 years of age as on 31.12.2010. No upper age limit is prescribed

The admissions made are provisional and subject to approval by the Pondicherry University

Process of application and admission: Down load the application form the website www.pkmc.edu.in and attach the following documents after filling the required details; certificate (English translated copy of the marks), grade sheet of the qualifying examination; certified copy of the grade equivalent to marks of Boards of Schools; copy of passport; Proof of NRI status of the student/parents/sponsor; colour passport size photograph (four numbers)

Application fee of US$50 or Indian Rs 2000/- in the form of a bank draft/cashier cheque in favour of Puducherry Medical College Society, payable at Puducherry. The filled in application along with the necessary documents should reach the Registrar (Academic), Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Kathirkamam, Puducherry-605009, India, Tele +914132277546, E-mail [email protected]

The last date for the receipt of application is 15th September, 2010, 5.00 p.m. (IST)

Selection: The order of selection is as follows; preference will be given to candidates belonging to Puducherry Union Territory; NRI sponsored candidates of Puducherry Union Territory; NRI candidates of other region; NRI sponsored candidates of other region; Foreign candidates

In case of difficulty in the method of normalization and if the eligible applicants are more than 22, an entrance examination will be held around 15th September, 2010 with 100 multiple choice questions in the subjects of English, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology each consisting of 20 questions and the results will be declared on the same day

Selection will be based on normalization or entrance examination

In case of tie of marks, the tie will be resolved by eliminating the marks in the following order; English, Physics, Chemistry, Botany

Even if the tie persists thereafter, the date of birth will be taken into account i.e. the one who was born earlier will get precedence over the one born later

Tuition fee: US$150000 for 4½ years (duration of the MBBS course) which is to be paid in one installment within five days from the date of dispatch of admission letter by E-mail/information over phone. If the candidate studies the course beyond 4½ years the tuition fees will be increased proportionately.
