1. Bachelor of Library and Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc./ BLIS)
Bachelor of Library and Information Science course by IGNOU is of 1-year duration but can be completed in a maximum of 4 years. It is a distance learning, online course offered by IGNOU. The course fee for Bachelor of Library and Information Science is Rs.5000.
- Bachelor’s degree with 50% marks OR
- Bachelor’s degree with a diploma in Library Science OR
- Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of working experience in Library and Information Center.
The student needs to apply for admission online by visiting the official IGNOU website ignou.ac.in. The admission is based on the merit of past academic performance. The course is offered in January and July sessions.
2. Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS)
The Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) course is of a minimum 1-year duration and a maximum of 4 years duration. There is no minimum or maximum age limit to pursue this course. The course fee of the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) is Rs.9000. This course gives emphasis on handling and accessing information in all forms rather than only conventional library activities. The course has gained immense popularity and thus, foreign universities like Mauritius, Dubai, Kuwait, etc. also offer this course.
- Candidates who have a Bachelor of Library and Information Science degree or any equivalent degree with minimum 50% marks.
- Candidates with 2 years of working experience in libraries, information centers or any other related organizations.
The MLIS admission procedure is both online and offline methods. In the online method, all processes like form filling, course selection, documentation, and payment are carried out online. There is no need to go to the Regional center for any process. In the offline method, the candidate can get the admission form from the nearest regional center. After filling, it has to be submitted to IGNOU Regional Center.
3. Certificate Program in Library and Information Science (CLIS)
The Certificate Program in Library and Information Science (CLIS) has been launched with the sole objective to cater to the staffing needs of rural libraries and to impart basic skills and training in library management. The medium of instruction is English but the candidate is allowed to write their articles in Hindi also. The minimum course duration is 6 months and the maximum duration is 2 years. There is no age limit to do the certificate course. The course fee is Rs.2000.
4. The candidate should have completed or BPP (Bachelor’s Preparatory Programme) from IGNOU.
Both online and offline methods are available for filling the application form. In the online application, all processes are done online and offline, the candidate has to go to the nearest regional center to complete the application procedure.
5. Post-Graduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking (PGDLAN)
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking (PGDLAN) program provides intensive practical training that helps in enhancing the technical skills of the learners. This helps them to manage or develop a computerized library and information center. The course duration is a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 4 years. There is no age limit to take admission in this course. The course fee is Rs.18,000.
The candidate possessing a Bachelor of Library and Information Science degree is eligible to pursue this course.
