Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) Program 2018

INSPIRE Scholarship 2018 - INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) is one of the famous offered by the Department of Science and Technology with the motto of attracting the talent to science.
This complete program is based on the motive of attracting the youth of the country to indulge in the scientific pursuit.

NOTE: One of the most exciting features of this scholarship program, however, is that there is no competitive exam for the screening of the talent.

This programme believes in and relies on the efficiency of the existing educational system for screening the talent.  

Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, has invited applications for the ‘Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)’, a component of Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) for the year 2018

What is INSPIRE Programme ?

Generation and Nurturing of a human talent pool capable of utilizing and developing first principles in science is both a pre-condition and integral part of such an innovation infrastructure The Government of India has approved the INSPIRE Scheme in November 2008 at a total cost of about Rs 1979.25 crores in the 11th Plan Period and Honourable Prime Minister launched the Program on 13th December 2008. The Program is continuing in the 12th Plan period at a budgetary allocation of Rs. 2200 crores


INSPIRE Scholarship Details

  • A total of 12,000 (including Institute Mode) scholarships are given annually under SHE to those who have passed Class XII in 2018 only, from recognized Indian State and Central Boards and studying regular three years B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons), four years B.S or five years integrated M.Sc./M.S. programs in Natural/Basic Sciences at any UGC recognized College/ University/Institutions in India
  • The Scheme in its current format does not include courses in Engineering, Medicine, Technology and other Professional/Technical /Applied Science Courses

Value & Type of Support

Each eligible candidate will receive a scholarship valued at Rs. 80,000/- annually. The cash value payable to the SHE scholarship holder is Rs. 60,000/- per annum along with a summer time attachment fee of Rs. 20,000/- which will be paid for undertaking a summertime research project.

Duration of the Support

Selected candidates will be supported for a maximum period of five years starting from the 1st-year course in B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons), BS and integrated course leading to M.S. or M.Sc. or till the completion of the course, whichever is earlier. Continuation of the scholarship for selected candidates is based on performance in the examinations conducted and certified by the institution imparting education.


Inspire Scholarship Eligibility Criteria 2018-2019

Applicant should be in age group of 17-22 years and should have passed Class XII Board Examination in 2018. Those who have passed Class XII Exam in the previous years will not be considered

Eligible Subjects

Applicant should be enrolled in a valid and regular degree level course in Natural/Basic sciences within the scope of INSPIRE Scholarship at any UGC recognized College or University or National Institute in India

The subjects under Basic & Natural Sciences within the scope of INSPIRE Scholarship for pursuing B.Sc./BS/Int. MSc/Int. MS Course are:

  • Physics,
  • Chemistry,
  • Mathematics,
  • Biology,
  • Statistics,
  • Geology,
  • Astrophysics,
  • Astronomy,
  • Electronics,
  • Botany,
  • Zoology,
  • Biochemistry,
  • Anthropology,
  • Microbiology,
  • Geophysics,
  • Geochemistry,
  • Atmospheric Sciences &
  • Oceanic Sciences
  • Those enrolled for correspondence courses are not eligible

Academic Eligibility

  • Applicant should satisfy one of the 3 criteria prescribed.


Criterion 1

  • Applications can be submitted based on the performance in Board Exams. Those coming within the cut-off threshold (top 1%) for each State or Central Board Exam in the year 2018 at Class XII level are eligible to apply.
  • The cut off for 2018 has not yet been finalized by the authorities. The percentage cut-off for 2017 for different boards is as follows.
  • Andhra Pradesh- 98.3, Assam -78.8, Bihar -73.4, Chhattisgarh-86.60, Goa- 85.50, Gujarat- 79.20, Haryana- 92.0, Himachal- 88.8, Jammu & Kashmir- 91.4, Jharkhand- 69.0, Karnataka- 92.67, Kerala- 96.75, Madhya Pradesh- 88.60, Maharashtra- 81.85, Manipur- 79.80, Meghalaya- 72.60, Mizoram- 82.60, Nagaland- 83.0, Odisha -73.33, Punjab- 90.44, Rajasthan- 88.60, Tamil Nadu- Board Data not provided by the Board, Tripura- 85.80, Uttar Pradesh- 83.40, Uttarakhand -78.80, West Bengal- 88.0, CBSE- 94.20, ICSE- 95.80, Viswa-Bharathi- 94.33, Telangana- 98.10


Criterion 2

Those coming within the top 10,000 Rank as per Common Merit List (CML) in JEE (Main)/ JEE (Advanced) /AIPMT or NEET for Medical; All Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) Fellows, National Talent Search Exam (NTSE) Scholars, International Olympiad Medalists and Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) Scholars are eligible to apply

Criterion 3

Those admitted to 4 years BS or 5 years Integrated M.Sc. programs in Basic & Natural Sciences at all Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) after coming within top 10,000 rank in JEE (Advanced); those admitted at all Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISERs), National Institute of Science Education & Research (NISER), Dept. of Atomic Energy - Centre for Basic Science (DAE - CBS) & coming within top 1% or falling within 10000 rank in JEE/NEET etc; those admitted to a University at Under-graduate or Integrated M.Sc. Program in Natural Sciences and Basic Sciences following National Level Competitive Exams including JEE/AIPMT/NEET can apply based on criterion 3


Inspire Scholarship Selection Criteria - What is the Selection Process ?

  • In the case the number of applications exceeds 12000; the selection will be on the basis of Board inclusive model within the available number of Scholarships
  • The selection will be subject to evaluation of each completed online application based on the above eligibility criteria including finalization of actual top 1% cut-off of Class 12th Exam 2018 for each Board

Inspire Scholarship Registration 2018

  • Applications can be submitted online at https://www.online-inspire.gov.in as per the instructions prescribed there, latest by 05.00 pm on 15th December 2018.

  • Applicant should use his/her own valid and functional email address for submission of the On-line application. The status of the application will be informed only through On-line portal to the applicant.
  • Before filling application form, applicant is required to scan and store the following documents as separate files and the same needs to be uploaded as required during the ‘On-line Application’ process. The mandatory documents are (i) Passport size photograph (ii) Class XII Mark sheet (iii) Class X Mark sheet or Certificate, for proof of Date of Birth (iv) Endorsement Form/ Certificate signed by the Principal of the College/Director of the Institute/Registrar of the University
  • The Other documents to be uploaded if applicable are

(i) Community/Caste Certificate if the applicant belongs to OBC/SC/ST
(ii) Eligibility Note/Advisory Note if provided by the State/Central Board
(iii) Certificate specifying Rank or Award in JEE (Main)/ JEE (Advanced)/ NEET/KVPY /JBNSTS/ NTSE / International Olympic Medalists, if the candidate is applying as per this criterion
(viii) Any other supporting documents

  • Photo should be in JPEG format, with size not exceeding 50 KB. All other documents should be in pdf format with size not exceeding 1 MB.
  • Once the application is submitted, a page will appear mentioning that the application has been submitted successfully. Applicant should note the Application Reference No. /IVR No. for future reference and correspondence. Applicant may take a print out of the submitted online application for his/her records. Application printout or any other documents which are submitted online need not be sent by Post to any office.
