It was established in 2007 to offer innovative and cost-effective language courses.

IGNOU Ph.D. level Language courses

The Doctoral Studies Programme is conducted in English, Hindi, French and Arabic languages. All Ph.D. courses from IGNOU are through Regular Mode. The Ph.D. in English and Hindi is aimed at training professionals and teachers in the skill and competencies related to the systematic investigation of various issues and problems in their area of study. Ph.D. in French aims at specialization in French & Francophone literature and cultures. Special emphasis has been laid on studies of linguistic aspects and on evolving didactics for ODL mode of teaching foreign languages (French).

The Doctoral Programme in Arabic is aimed at developing a critical understanding of Arabic Language, Literature, and Culture.

Scholars are likely to contribute to the modern teaching methods for Arabic, the contribution of Indians to the Arabic world of knowledge and a deeper understanding of the Arab world with an emphasis on Language, Literature, and Culture.

IGNOU Masters Degree Courses

IGNOU Conducts MA Degree programs in two languages – Hindi and English. Both these are through Distance Education mode. The aim of MA English Distance mode is to provide learners with a sound base in language as well as exposure to a wide range of literature, with options for specialization in a particular area.

The learners are expected to develop confidence in their critical and analytical abilities. This 64-credit program has a two-tier structure: five compulsory core courses and three optional courses. Each course is worth 8 credits. MEG-01 – MEG-04 are offered in the first year, MEG-05 and optional courses are offered in the second year.
The MA Hindi program exposes learners to a wide range of Hindi literature. It consists of courses worth 64 credits. The program can be completed in a minimum period of two years and a maximum period of five years.

Bachelor Degree Courses

IGNOU provides BA in English, Hindi, Urdu, and Sanskrit through distance mode. To earn a Bachelor’s Degree, a learner has to complete 132 credits in six semesters. It has the following objectives:
1. Introduce the learners to the main themes and topics of disciplines in humanities, social sciences, and sciences,
2. Provide the learners with the information and skills necessary to understand and analyze their world,
3. Enable the learners to work towards ability and skill enhancement through exposure to appropriate courses.
4. Impart reading and writing skills through assignments and exercises of such kind at an undergraduate level.
5. Expose the learner to the importance of interdisciplinarity.

IGNOU Diploma Courses

The School of Humanities, IGNOU imparts a Diploma in Urdu and Diploma in Creative Writing in English through Distance mode. The School of Foreign Languages, IGNOU offers Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language. This is also through Distance education mode.

The Diploma Programme in Creative Writing in English provides understanding, skills and professional knowledge about the art of writing and develops the creative ability of those interested in a professional career as a freelance writer. The curriculum is structured to impart instruction in progressive stages so as to ensure that a learner can assimilate information about a writer’s art and develops his/her creative ability. This Programme includes training in imaginative writing skills in relation to feature articles (women’s issues, book reviews, etc), writing short stories, scripts for TV/Radio, and writing poetry.
The Diploma in Creative Writing in English comprises two compulsory and four elective courses. Each course is of four credits.
The aim of this Programme is to enable/ acquire understanding of the Urdu language and Literature beyond Certificate level. It also covers the knowledge of the art of creative writing, technique of translation and editing and publishing etc.
The Programme comprises five courses: two compulsory and three elective. It’s objectives are also to provide a historical background of Urdu language and literature and comprehension capability of Urdu prose and poetry.
The Diploma in Teaching of German as a foreign language is the first of its kind through distance mode with an active practical component of classroom teaching. This program is aimed at meeting the needs of professional German language teachers.

This program was developed in collaboration with Goethe Institute / Max Muller Bhavan, University of Vienna and IGNOU and aims to train teachers professionally by enhancing higher language learning competencies. It will become a model for teacher training in other European Languages.

Diploma in Urdu (DUL) 10th pass with Urdu as one of the subjects OR

Certificate in the Urdu language from IGNOU

Diploma in Teaching German as a Foreign Language (DTG) Any candidate with a BA degree, German knowledge of B1 and/or any equivalent language proficiency.

Any candidate who is willing to teach German as a Foreign Language at Indian Secondary Schools.

IGNOU Certificate Courses

IGNOU provides Certificate courses in various languages, all through Distance Education mode. One can opt for a Certificate Programme in Functional English to enhance the English proficiency and communicate with confidence and fluency. There is a Certificate in Teaching of English as a Second Language which will enhance the teachers understanding of learners, the learning process, the nature and structure of language, and the teaching of it in terms of new and more effective methodologies of classroom management, material selection, and evaluation.

The certificate course in the Urdu language is meant for Urdu and Hindi speakers who want to learn how to read, write and correctly speak Urdu. The focus is on all the four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. There are certificate courses in Foreign languages also, namely, Russian, Spanish, French, Arabic, Persian, Korean and Japanese.

IGNOU Admission Process

Admission to certificate programs in language courses by IGNOU are offered in both the January and July cycles. In order to enroll for all the programs offered by IGNOU, the candidate has to visit the official website of IGNOU and fill the application form of the course which has to be pursued. All the required fields should be filled correctly and at the end after paying the fees, the registration is completed. For filling the form offline, the candidate should download the form from the official website of the university and then fill the post and post it to the University’s official mailing address.

For doing Ph.D., the candidate needs to clear an entrance exam conducted by IGNOU at the National level. Then only a candidate is allowed to do a Ph.D. from IGNOU. After clearing the exam, the candidate can fill the form online or offline.
