Hong Kong Research Grants Committee announces Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) 2021-2022

About Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)
  • Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme is open for International students to pursue their doctoral studies in Hong Kong, China. Established by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2009. Aims to attract the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong’s universities.
  • The Fellowship shall Provide a monthly stipend of HK$26,600 (approx. US$3,410) and a conference travel allowance of HK$13,300 (approx. US$1,700) per year during the normative study period for up to three years.

CUHK Vice-Chancellor HKPFS Scholarship
  • Offers HKPFS awardees a tuition fee waiver for their whole normative study period.
  • Provides an award of HK$40,000 (approx. US$5,130) for lodging in the first year of study and HK$20,000 in the subsequent years within the normative study period.
  • The on-campus hostel fee will be waived in the first year of study. Guaranteed on-campus accommodation during the normative period of study to HKPFS awardees who submit timely applications.
  • For HKPFS awardees with a normative study period of four years, CUHK provides stipend and conference travel allowance at HKPFS level for the fourth year.

Eligibility Criteria for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2021
  • To be eligible for Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme for International Students, you must fulfill the following criteria:
Required Language – English
Eligible Countries – All World Countries
Those who are seeking admission as new full-time PhD students in UGC-funded institutions of Hong Kong, irrespective of their country of origin, prior work experience and ethnic background, should be eligible to apply.
Applicants should demonstrate outstanding qualities of Academic excellence; Research ability and potential; Communication and interpersonal skills; and Leadership abilities..

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2021 Application Process
  • Candidates can apply online only on website https://www.gs.cuhk.edu.hk/
  • Please follow below steps to avail Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme for International Students:
Step 1 Submit an initial application to the RGC through their on-line application https://cerg1.ugc.edu.hk/hkpfs/InitApplication.jsp and obtain a HKPFS reference number.
Each applicant may choose up to two programmes in each application.
Step 2 Submit your full application through CUHK’s Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes and quote the HKPFS reference number. Applicants who have chosen two CUHK programmes in the RGC’s initial application are reminded to submit a separate application for each programme at CUHK.
Step 3 Submit the required supporting documents.
After having submitted the application via the Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes, applicants are required to upload scanned copies of the following supporting documents to the Online Application System for Postgraduate Programmes AND also submit the hard-copy of documents to the relevant Graduate Division by the deadline.
