United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability UNU-IAS PhD Scholarships, Japan 2017

The United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), a leading research and teaching institute in Tokyo, Japan, is offering the Japan Foundation for UNU (JFUNU) Scholarships for the 3-year PhD Programme in Sustainable Science commencing September 2017, for outstanding applicants from developing countries with financial need

The PhD Programme in Sustainability Science aims to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science

Students are required to obtain 14 credits and are expected to complete all degree requirements by July of their third year. They must also complete a PhD dissertation in 1 of several UNU-IAS research themes, focusing on global change and sustainability

Benefits

The scholarship provides for a monthly allowance of 120,000 JPY for living expenses for a maximum of 36 months. Travel costs to and from Japan, visa handling fees, and health/accident insurance costs must be borne by the student. Tuition fees are fully waived for JFUNU scholars

JFUNU Scholarships 2017 Eligibility Criteria

Eligible scholarship recipients would be those students with outstanding academic qualifications from developing countries on the OECD DAC list

They must have demonstrated financial need, who have been accepted into the PhD programme in Sustainability Science by the UNU-IAS. Applicants who are currently living in Japan under a working visa and those who want to pursue a second PhD degree at UNU-IAS are not eligible for the scholarship

Applicants for the PhD programme must possess a strong interest in sustainability studies, demonstrate commitment to study and understand global issues, and possess a Masters degree in disciplines related to sustainability studies and a minimum of 2 years of practical field experience related to UNU-IAS research themes

Those without experience must possess 2 Masters degrees, at least 1 of which must in a discipline related to sustainability studies

United Nations University Scholarships 2017 Application Process

During the course admission selection process, outstanding applicants from developing countries with financial need will be automatically considered as candidates for the award of scholarships at UNU-IAS

Thus no separate application for scholarships is required. Application for the PhD Programme closes on 28th April 2017
