The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country’s economic, social and research-based growth

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to; attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally; develop their leadership potential; position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

Eligibility: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to apply

Scope: A total of 70 new two-year awards are taken up annually with a total of up to 140 awards active at any one time

Value: Awards are valued at $70,000 per year (taxable) for duration two years

Fellowships/Distributed: The fellowships are distributed equally across CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC over time

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished from existing postdoctoral fellowships programs by its emphasis on; the synergy between an applicant’s individual merit and potential to launch a successful research intensive career; and the host institution’s commitment to the research program and environment with which the applicant is to be affiliated

Application Form:

Applicants for the 2013-14 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program must fulfill or have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree;

On a date within the eligibility window of 23rd October, 2010 through 31st December, 2013

Applicants who have not fulfilled all requirements for their degree at the time of application must do so no later than 31st December, 2013 and submit proof no later than 15th January 2014

Applicants who do not submit such proof will be automatically withdrawn from the competition or;

The interruption(s)/delay(s) in your career must have occurred after you fulfilled all the requirements of your degree

Note that your eligibility window will only be extended by the duration of the delay(s)/interruption(s), to a maximum of two years

Justification for the extension must be provided in the Special Circumstances attachment

“Fulfilled all requirements of the degree” refers to the date that the applicant completed all the steps required for obtaining their degree

Although these requirements may vary by institution and degree type, they normally include thesis defence corrections and thesis deposition

Host institution eligibility:

Institutions eligible to host a Banting Fellow include Canadian and foreign universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges and not-for-profit organizations with a strong research mandate and capacity

Canadian governments (federal, provincial and municipal) and all for-profit organizations are not eligible to participate as host institutions

Applicants contact Universities to seek support; Universities submit nominations to agencies: July-October 2013

Deadline for Universities to submit complete nominations: 23rd October, 2013

Selection Committee meetings: 28th January, 2014 to 29th January, 2014

Steering Committee meeting: 11th March, 2014 (TBC)

Results announced late March: March-2014

Payment begins: May or September 2014 or Jan 2015
