No Separate MBBS Entrance Exams by AIIMS and JIPMER – NEET  is the Single Entrance Exam

NEET is the Single Entrance Exam for MBBS Admission – The NMC (National Medical Commission) has announced that from the academic year 2020, the students who aspire to join the medical stream will sit for a single entrance exam only i.e. NEET in order to get admission to any medical college across the country. While speaking  to the media, the Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) would come into force as a single entrance exam for MBBS admission. It would be implemented from the year 2020.

Earlier, the NEET had replaced All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) in 2013 as the only entrance exam for admission into majority of medical institutions.

Until the ongoing academic year of 2019-20, apart from the NEET Exam, there existed two entrance tests – JIPMER MBBS entrance test and AIIMS MBBS entrance test. The announcement of a single NEET MBBS entrance exam came after the National Medical Commission Act was enacted recently. Except the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) located at Puducherry and the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) located at different places throughout India, every medical college across the country used to accept the NEET scores for admissions.

At present, the AIIMS entrance test, conducts admissions to the 10 AIIMS colleges. JIPMER which is based in Puducherry, conducts admissions to MBBS seats through the JIPMER entrance test

Now that there will be a single entrance test for admission to all MBBS courses, it will benefit the students in a big way as they will have a single window for counselling in order to get a seat at the All – India level.

Dr Harsh Vardhan stated that it will help to establish a common standard in the sector of medical education across the country. In 2019, more than 15 lakh candidates had registered for NEET exam. For JIPMER, 1.4 lakh and for AIIMS entrance exam, around 2 lakh candidates had registered.

The online application process for the NEET 2020 is slated to start from December 2, 2019. The last date for the same is December 31, 2019. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is incharge for conducting this exam. The registered candidates will be able to download their admit cards from March 27, 2020 onwards. The exam is slated to be held on May 3, 2020. The results will be announced on June 4, 2020.
