The Full form of GATE is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. GATE is a competitive entrance exam which is conducted annually for admission to various post graduate programs in Science and Technology in India. The exam is conducted and administered jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institute of Technology (at Roorkee, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Delhi, Guwahati, Madras and Bombay) on behalf of the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Human Resource Department (HRD), Government of India. GATE exam is usually conducted in the month of January or February every year. It is an online computer based paper of 3 hours duration. The paper primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of the candidate in undergraduate subjects of science and engineering. The eligibility criteria to appear for GATE exam is graduation from a recognized board or university. The candidates who are studying in their last year of the engineering course i.e. B.Tech, B.E., B. Pharmacy, B. Arch etc. can also apply for the exam. The list of subjects in which GATE exam is conducted are Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science and Information Technology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Physics and Chemistry.
