The Full form of AFCAT is Air Force Common Admission Test. AFCAT is conducted by the Indian Air Force for recruitment of candidates into Flying (Short Service Commission only), Technical (Permanent and Short Service Commission) and Ground Duty (Permanent and Short Service Commission) Branches. The Flying branch consists of fighters, transports and helicopters and the Technical branch deals with the mechanical and electronic aspects, while the Ground Duty branch comprises of administration, accounts, logistics, education and meteorology. The Permanent Commission refers to a career in the Indian Air Force until retirement and the short service commission means a limited period career in the IAF. The term for the SSC is 14 years and it will not be extended upon completion. By writing the AFCAT, one can join either the Permanent Commission or the Short Service Commission of the IAF. AFCAT is also referred to as the Indian Air Force Exam. The AFCAT is conducted twice a year, once in February and the other in August. Established in 2011, the IAF recruits its officers for all its branches, except for the medical and dental branches. Unmarried Indian males with an age limit from 20 to 26 years (for Technical and Ground Duty branch) and 20 to 24 years (for Flying branch) are eligible to apply for AFCAT.
