University Grants Commission planning to revise Syllabus for National Testing Agency (NET) and form expert panel to carry out revision

UGC to revise NET Syllabus – The Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Jagadesh Kumar, announced on Tuesday that the UGC is planning to revise the syllabus for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and will establish an expert panel for this purpose. The revision of the syllabus has been decided in a meeting held on November 3.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is responsible for conducting the UGC-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET), which serves as a qualification test for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and assistant professor appointments in Humanities and Social Sciences, including Indian and some foreign languages, as well as certain science subjects. The UGC-NET is conducted twice a year in 83 subjects, typically in June and December.

The UGC had last initiated the process of updating the syllabi for UGC-NET subjects in 2017. UGC Chairman Kumar highlighted the significant developments in higher education, particularly in adopting multidisciplinary curricula and holistic education, have occurred since the launch of the National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020.

Consequently, the UGC, in a recent meeting, decided to undertake the task of updating the Syllabus for UGC-NET subjects. An expert committee will be formed by the UGC to carry out this revision.

UGC Chairman assured that candidates will be given ample time before the introduction of the new syllabus in UGC-NET, ensuring a smooth transition to the updated curriculum.
