NCERT dropped Key Chapters from Class 10 textbooks

Several Key Chapters from Class 10 Textbooks removed by NCERT

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has dropped some of the key chapters from Class 10 Textbooks as a part of their ‘rationalization’ exercise. Full chapters on the Periodic Classification of Elements, Democracy and Diversity, Challenges to Democracy, and Political Parties are removed from the newly released textbooks of class 10. Among the topics dropped from the science textbook are also chapters on environmental sustainability and sources of energy

The changes were announced by the NCERT last year as part of a “rationalisation” exercise based on expert recommendations. “Difficulty level, overlapping content, and content irrelevant in the present context” are some of the reasons listed by NCERT for dropping these chapters from the curriculum

As per the NCERT website, “The National Education Policy 2020, also emphasizes reducing the content load and providing opportunities for experiential learning with a creative mindset

Even though the Class 10 chemistry textbook drops the entire chapter that introduces students to the Periodic Table, it remains part of the syllabus for Class 11.

The NCERT faced criticism earlier this year for removing the theory of evolution from the science textbook for Class 10. In an open letter, more than 1,800 scientists and educators expressed their disapproval of the rationalisation process.
