MBBS seats increased by over 4,500 – Good news for all the desirous medical aspirants who are looking for admission into various medical colleges across the country.
As per the data submitted by the Medical Council of India-Board of Governors (MCI-BOG) to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, for the new academic year, the number of MBBS seats has been increased. Around 4,500 MBBS seats have been increased compared to the seats available last year.
The last year total number of seats available were 69, 712 whereas this figure has gone up to 74, 215.
Uttar Pradesh will be the biggest beneficiary as 603 seats have been escalated. Last year a total of 6, 499 seats were available in Uttar Pradesh, whereas it has increased to 7, 102 this year
This sudden increase in the seats is mainly due to the many medical colleges offering more seats under the new Economically Weaker Section quota and the relaxed rules that allow colleges to increase the number of the seats.
This is to be noted that our country is facing a shortage of doctors. There are 10.41 lakh allopathic doctors registered with MCI. The current doctor population ratio is 1:1596 as per the current population estimate of 1,33 billion. However, there should be one doctor for a population of 1, 000 as per the WHO norms.
