Agniveers’ in-service training will count for 50% Credit for a Graduation program specially designed by IGNOU

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on June 14, 2022, has announced a new recruitment scheme called ‘Agnipath’ for youth in between the age group of 17.5 years to 21 years to serve in the Indian armed forces.  The youth selected under this scheme will be known as ‘Agniveers’.

In order to enhance the future career prospects of Agniveers and equip them for various job roles, the Ministry of Education will recognize in-service training received by Agniveers as credits for a graduation program. This in-service training both (technical and non-technical) will count for 50% of credit for the three-year skill-based degree program specially designed by IGNOU. The remaining 50% credit will come from a basket of courses that cover a wide variety of subjects like languages, History, Economics, Public Administration, Education, Tourism, Vocational Studies, Agriculture and Jyotish and others.

The IGNOU program will be aligned to UGC norms and National Credit Framework/National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) as mandated under the National Education Policy 2020. It will also have a provision for multiple exit points. An undergraduate certificate will b be issued on successful completion of the first-year courses, an undergraduate diploma on successful completion of the first and second year courses, and a degree on completion of all the courses in a three-year time frame.

The degree will be awarded by IGNOU as per UGC nomenclature and will be recognized both in India and abroad.
