What are Vocational Courses ?

Vocational Courses by NIOS – Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an important element of the nation’s education initiative. Vocational courses are an educational discipline that enables individual to acquire skills that are required for a particular trade.  These courses are traditionally non academic and are completely related to a specific trade, occupation or vocation.

Vocational Courses are offered in many areas, including health care, creative fields, computer networking, food preparation, and cosmetology. It is also available in skilled trades, such as heating and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, electrical systems, and automotive repair. These courses can take place at any level of education, post-secondary or higher education. There are varieties of courses available for students to choose from.

In order for Vocational Education to play its part effectively in the changing national context and for India to enjoy the fruits of the demographic dividend, the Government has taken a number of important initiatives in this area.

One of the objectives of the Vocational Education Program of NIOS is to meet the need for skilled and middle-level manpower for the growing sectors of economy, both organized and unorganized. The range of Vocational Education courses has been expanding over the years depending upon needs of learners and market demands. The present Vocational Education courses of NIOS are meant for both urban and rural sectors.
