Audio Engineering, a branch of Audio science, is a career for those who love music and wish to be a part of this industry. Audio Engineering is all about capturing sound, recording, copying, editing, mixing and reproducing sound using electronic and mechanical devices. It involves both production and post production tasks. Production part may involve everything from set-up to the actual recording.

Audio engineers use a variety of devices to record even the slightest sound variations. Electronic mixing board (console board), which contains variety of switches, dials, lights and meters, is a vital part in audio engineering as it can control sound input while recording or editing. In the post production section, the recorded material gets polished or “morphed” into sound. Digital audio workstations, signal processors and sequencing software are the other integral components used in audio engineering.

An audio engineer is someone with experience and training in production and manipulation of sound through mechanical and digital means. Job opportunities for audio engineers and technicians are available in various field of the entertainment industry such as film, television, multimedia design, animation and CD production units. FM radio stations, private TV channel and advertising firms also recruit sound engineers.

Salary

Audio engineering is one of the careers that bring recognition along with money. A recognized audio engineer can easily get high salaries from the industry. A well suited candidate with all the necessary experience and qualifications required for the job can expect a salary range between Rs.20000 to Rs.23,000.

If on the job training is required, then salary can vary between Rs.12,000 to Rs.15,000 depending upon the designation and the experience related to it.

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune was established in the year 1960. It has gained world-wide recognition as one of the most famous institutes which gives training in film making and in the production of television programmes. Alumni of the college are some of the top shot film and television personalities.

FTII  offers a three year full time Postgraduate  diploma course in Sound recording and Sound design. Intake capacity is 14 seats. Bachelors degree holders in any discipline who have studied physics at Plus two level are eligible for admission. The Institute also offers a Postgraduate certificate course in sound recording and television engineering. Total number of seats available for this course is 12.

Audio Engineering Institutes in Kerala

The Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT), Thiruvananthapuram offers  one year  Post Graduate diploma course in science and development communication for graduates in any disciplines.

The Keltron Advanced  Training Centre, Thiruvananthapuram,  conducts a short term diploma  coursed in sound engineering.

The Amrita School of Arts and Science, Brahmasthanam, Edappally, Kochi offers two year full time MFA course in visual media. Graduates  in any discipline with  50 percent marks  are eligible  for admission.
