Career Courses  in different Streams of Engineering.

Those who are interested for having a career in engineering with subjects including physics, chemistry and mathematics, they can choose BE/ B.Tech. courses in petroleum, polymer, chemical or plastic engineering, according to their aptitude and interest.

Details of different streams are as follows:

Petroleum engineering

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) University, Dhanbad, is a prominent institution that offers B.Tech. course of 4 years in petroleum engineering. The 45 seats are available for Petraoleum engineering course. Students get admission here through a joint entrance examination which is held by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT-JEE).

Students who have cleared their High Secondary examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate or those who are appearing for their final qualifying examination, they are eligible to appear for IIT-JEE which conducts every year. Near about 25 per cent of students are provided with different privileges like ISM scholarships and free tuition.

Some other institutes or universities that offer petroleum engineering or technology degree courses are the following:

  • School of engineering and technology, Bharathidasan University, Trichurippalli, offers B.Tech. degree course in petroleum technology. Web site: www.bdu.ac.in.
  • The Institute of Petroleum Studies and Chemical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh.

Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune

The Institute of Petroleum Technology which is under Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Raisan, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, also offers a four-year B.Tech. Programme in petroleum engineering. The selection is based on the marks scored in the AIEEE test.

Periyar Maniammai University, Periyar Nagar, Vallam, Thanjavur, which is also offering B.Tech. degree course in petrochemical technology. The eligibility to get into it is to clear Plus Two examination with mathematics and physics as compulsory subjects, and one subject, either chemistry, biotechnology, computer science or biology, as optional.

The selection to the course is only based on PMU (Periyar Maniammai University) entrance test.

In private sector, the College of Engineering Studies under the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies conducts a B.Tech. course in applied petroleum engineering. This selection is based on AIEEE rank and the aptitude test. The AICTE approval also must be ensured before getting admission.

Polymer engineering

The B.Tech. programme in polymer engineering includes the theory and knowledge of chemistry. Those who have a BE or B.Tech. degree in polymer engineering, polymer science or rubber technology with maximum  marks can choose for ME or M.Tech. course in polymer engineering. The selection will be based on GATE score.

In Kerala, the Department of Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Thrikkakara, Kochi, under the Cochin University of Science and Technology, is one of the pioneers in the area of higher education. It offers four-year B.Tech. degree course in polymer science engineering.

The minimum eligibility for admission to have  this degree is at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate in Plus Two examination with mathematics, physics and chemistry as an optional subjects, and 50 per cent marks in mathematics.

The selection is based on CUSAT-CAT which conducts every year. Those who obtain B.Tech. degree in polymer science and engineering can find jobs in major tyre manufacturing companies, polymer manufacturing and processing industries and research institutes.

Plastic engineering

A  B.Tech. degree course in plastic engineering and technology is one more option for students who have passed high secondary with physics, chemistry and mathematics. The Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET), Chennai, is a prominent institute that offers this course. CIPET centres at Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar and Lucknow also offer this course. The selection in this institute is  based on CIPET joint entrance test that conduct everywhere in the country.
