Helen Keller was a young girl who was three months away from turning seven years of age when her teacher arrived. She became blind and deaf after suffering from a fever at a very young age (of just nineteen months). Due to her disabilities, she often felt isolated and frustrated. She couldn’t understand her emotions or if she felt anything at all. She lacked knowledge and understanding of basic vocabulary, and was illiterate due to her disabilities. She often felt that she was like a ship that couldn’t see its way because of the dense fog and could only rely on the plummet and sounding-line. She would internally cry for help, but she believed that no one would help her because of how blind and deaf people were treated back then. However, with Anne’s steady patience and kindness, she was able to become more eager, emotional and hopeful. She experiences emotions of regret and sorrow after she gets introduced to the world of words. By the end of the lesson, she is happier and more determined to get a better understanding of the world around her.

Character Sketch of Anne Mansfield Sullivan
Anne Mansfield Sullivan was Helen Keller’s educator and lifelong companion. She became partially blind when she contracted Trachoma at the age of five, which left with no reading or writing skills. Trachoma is an eye disease. She was resilient, kind, patient and caring. She knew that Helen had not received much love and attention due to her disabilities. So she taught Helen while giving her the love and care she had not received from others due to her conditions. When she got into an argument with Helen while teaching the difference between ‘m-u-g’ and ‘w-a-t-e-r’, she decided to drop the topic and bring it up at other opportunities, showcasing her determined yet patient nature. She did not become frustrated or aggressive when Helen dashed the doll on the floor. Instead, she took the girl to the well-house to properly teach her what ‘w-a-t-e-r’ meant.
