The narrator is a young boy who studies in school, is Chandu’s childhood friend and comes from a higher caste. Even though society teaches him to stay away from lower-caste people, he refuses to follow such unfair rules. He treats Chandu with respect and affection. He looks up to Chandu as his hero and gets excited by his dreams and new ideas. The narrator is sensitive and thoughtful, whenever Chandu is insulted by upper-caste men, he feels hurt and worried about his friend. He also has a playful side and helps Chandu in his adventures, like learning to ride a bicycle. Through his character, the story shows that the new generation can challenge old, unjust traditions and support equality, friendship, and dignity for everyone.

His creativity and leadership help him form the “Barber’s Trade Union,” showing he has a strong sense of self-respect and confidence. He becomes a symbol of social change.
