The narrator is the writer of the story who is a heart surgeon named Dr. Christian Barnard. He has done innovation in the field of heart surgeries by successfully attempting heart transplant surgeries. He is a logical, scientific and deeply philosophical person. He often considers profoundly deep topics like why people suffer. He looks for an answer from a logical and reasonable point of view. He does not agree with the extreme religious explanation of his father- that suffering was due to God’s will to make a person more noble. Dr. Barnard is logical but also emotional and sensitive when it comes to suffering, especially of children. He finds suffering of children to be particularly cruel.
