He participated with the team in events including the Kanga Cricket League, Comrade Shield, and Purshottam Shield. Khan’s captain at the time, Sandeep Mahadkar, highlighted the latter’s prowess with the bat by citing an instance in which he reverse swing a ball that had already been thrown 50 overs, bowling ten first overs and assisting his team in winning a Comrade Shield match. Impressed by Zaheer’s talent, T. A. Sekhar, the bowling coach present there, encouraged Khan to play for Baroda.

Khan immediately established himself as a first-class player for Baroda. With stats of 8/145 throughout the game, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings (5/16), Khan was named man of the match in the Ranji Trophy final of the 2000–01 season against Railways, helping his team win the trophy.
