Sanya Malhotra was born on 25 February, 1992 to Sunil Malhotra; an engineer and Renu Malhotra; a Homemaker in Delhi, India. She has an elder sister named Shagun Malhotra. Sanya Malhotra is a trained dancer in contemporary and ballet. She graduated from Gargi College, Delhi University. She has also participated in the reality television show Dance India Dance and managed to make it to the top 100. She later on moved to Mumbai, where she began participating in auditions and started assisting camerapersons for a variety of television commercials. She later on went on to be contacted by the film casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

2016- 2019:
- Malhotra was first selected through auditions for Nitesh Tiwari’s biographical sports film Dangal, along with Fatima Sana Sheikh who herself was also very new in the industry.
- Before the shooting of the film began, Malhotra stated in interviews that did not know much about wrestling and that in order to fit into the character, she had to watch various different videos on wrestling, how wrestlers talk, move, their body language and the training that they did.
- Both Malhotra and Sheikh went through a total of five rounds of auditions, training and workshops with Tiwari and Aamir Khan for the film.
- According to reports, they were personally trained by coach and former wrestler Kripa Shankar Patel Bishnoi himself.
- The debut film of Malhotra went on to receive critical acclaim and became the highest grossing Indian film ever at that time.
- It went on to gross a massive $250 million worldwide, which was close to 2000 crore in rupees.
- Different critics acknowledged Malhotra’s performance, with the acclaimed Indian author, film critic and journalist Anupama Chopra stating that Malhotra provided a “strong support” to the film and the story.

The water weighed around 10kgs.
- The film again received critical acclaim and critics like Raja Sen praised Malhotra by calling her a “fearless actress”.
- In the year 2018 itself she took on a supporting role in the film Badhaai Ho, co-starring Ayushmaan Khurana.
- The film directed by Amit Sharma was commercially successful and critically praised as well.
- In 2019 she starred in the film Photograph, co-starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The plot revolves around a street photographer named Rafi, who continuously tries to persuade a student named Miloni to pose as his wife so that his grandmother stops pestering him to get married.

2020-2022:
- 2020 saw the release of two films for Malhotra.
- Firstly, she starred in Shakuntla Devi, which was released on Amazon Prime and Netflix due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
- She played the role of Shakuntala Devi’s daughter(played by Vidya Balan), named Anupama.
- Critic Mike McCahill of The Guardian commended Malhotra’s performance and stated her character to be”quietly affecting” in her part as a supporting role.
- Her second release of the year, Ludo, a black comedy film by Anurag Basu received mixed to positive reviews for its cinematography, screenplay, performances, direction, etc.
