The Full form of TRAI is Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. TRAI is an independent regulatory body established under section 3 of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, by Govt. of India in 1997, to oversee the telecommunications industry in India. TRAI is responsible and charged with ensuring the uniform growth of the telecom sector in India as well as protecting the interests of both consumers and telecom service providers.

It provides suggestions that how providers can improve technical compatibility and efficiency and also promotes technological improvements. TRAI is also responsible for conducting surveys at regular intervals to evaluate the services provided by telecom service providers to ensure that they are functioning in the best interest of consumers and are acting in compliance with universal service obligations. Along with protecting the interest of the consumers and service providers, it also adjudicates disputes, regulates telecommunication services, dispose of appeals, etc.

It establishes standards for QoS (Quality of Services) and supervises how the telecom service providers share revenue. The functions of TRAI that are mentioned under section 11 of the TRAI Act includes; consumer protection, ensuring affordable tariff, ensuring QoS (Quality of Service), regulating interconnections to provide a transparent and fair environment to promote the growth of telecom industry.
