The Full form of SAM is Severe Acute Malnutrition. SAM is the most extreme and visible form of undernutrition. Its face is a child – frail and skeletal – who requires urgent treatment to survive. Children with SAM (Severe Acute Malnutrition) have very low weight for their height and severe muscle wasting. They may also have nutritional oedema – characterized by swollen feet, face and limbs. About two thirds of these children live in Asia and almost one third live in Africa. WHO’s Severe Acute Malnutrition with MC (medical complications) kit (SAM/MC) kit is a standard kit designed to provide medical treatment for 50 children below 5 years of age suffering from severe malnutrition with medical complications. The SAM/MC kit includes de-worming, antibiotics, antifungal, antimalarial and anti-scabies medicines, and a rehydration mix specific to treat cases of SAM. This prepacked kit is designed for use where there is disruption of medical supplies in emergency settings as a way to fill a gap until the medical supply mechanisms are restored. The SAM/MC kit is specifically designed for inpatient care and therefore to be used by trained medical/health workers. The SAM/MC kit does NOT contain any medicines for the management of HIV or TB, and does NOT contain any therapeutic foods.
