The Full form of PNG is Portable Network Graphics. It was created as an open format to replace GIF, because the patent for GIF was owned by one company and nobody else wanted to pay licensing fees. It also allows for a full range of color and better compression. It is a format for storing bit-mapped (raster) images on computer. It is also known as a successor of GIF format images. It uses the less compression technique to save images like GIF file but without copyright issues. It contains a bitmap of indexed color so it is also called bit-mapped image. It’s used almost exclusively for web images, never for print images. For photographs, PNG is not as good as JPEG, because it creates a larger file. But for images with some text, or line art, it’s better, because the images look less “bitmappy.” Portable Network Graphics Format was developed in early 1995. GIF contains only 256 colors and this limitation of GIF results in the introduction of PNG and also the main reason behind its development. PNG has a file extension “.png”. The advantage of PNG is that it provides low-resolution images that look good and load quickly.
