The Full form of ORS is Oral Rehydration Solution. ORS is a glucose-based salt solution used to prevent and treat dehydration, especially in case of people who have diarrhea. It is a common illness in travellers. Unlike other fluids, the ratio of the ingredients in an Oral re-hydration Solution matches what the human body needs to recover from a diarrheal illness. ORS consists of a salt-and-sugar-based solution taken orally to treat dehydration from diarrhea.

The salts can be pre-packaged and typically include a combination of glucose, sodium, potassium, and citrate to be mixed with clean water. Homemade ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) recipe include six (6) teaspoons of sugar, half (1/2) level teaspoon of salt, and one litre of boiled or clean drinking water and then cooled – 5 cupfuls (each cup about 200 ml.) ORS can help to replace the fluids lost due to vomiting and diarrhea.

ORS is important because it helps to re-hydrate the human body with essential electrolytes, especially sodium and potassium. Loss of water in the body can be overcome when anyone drink ORS mixed water. There are very rare side effects though – bloated abdomen, gas, etc., but drinking ORS on daily basis is not good for our body.
