The Full form of NPR is National Population Register. The NPR is a database or register of identities of residents of a country. It is being prepared at the District, Sub-District, Local (Village/sub-Town), State and National level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship Rules, 2003. It is mandatory to register in the NPR for every usual resident of India. For the purposes of NPR, a “usual” resident is defined as a person who has resided in India for the past six months or more or a person who intends to reside in India for the next six months or more.
The main objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive database of identity of every usual resident in the country. The database would contain bio-metric as well as demographic particulars. The demographic details include: Name of person, Father’s name, Mother’s name, Relationship to head of household, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, Sex, Spouse’s name (if married), Nationality (as declared), Present and Permanent address of usual residence, Duration of stay at present address, Educational qualification, Occupation/Activity.
The data for NPR was collected in 2010 along with the house listing phase of Census of India 2011. Now it has been decided to update the NPR during April to September 2020 along with the house listing phase of Census 2021 in all the States/UTs except Assam.
