The full form of HSN is Harmonized System of Nomenclature. It is a harmonised coding system and commodity description. It was developed by the World Customs Organisation (WCO) in order to classify different types of goods from all over the world to be arranged in a logical and systematic manner. WCO maintains this code. “The International Convention on the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System” governs the HSN. It helps to regularise the procedures of custom and trade. In this way, the total cost involved in international trade comes down. Currently there are 500 trade groups listed under HSN which are identified via a unique six digit code. As of now, 200 countries follow this system. In India, the government implements GST on goods on the basis of HSN number.
