Food Safety and Standards Authority of India

 

The Full form of FSSAI is Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI is an autonomous body established and governed under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. In India, FSSAI is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of public through the regulation and supervision of food safety. The role of FSSAI is to lay down scientific standards for food articles to inspect, monitor and regulate the manufacturing, distribution, storage, sales and import of food articles to ensure availability of safe and healthy food for human consumption. The Head of the FSSAI is appointed by the Central Government, who is a non-executive Chairperson, either holding or has held the position of not below the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. The current Chairperson for FSSAI is Rita Teotia and Pawan Kumar Agarwal is the current Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for FSSAI. It is headquartered in New Delhi, India. The authority also has 8 regional offices located in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Guwahati, Cochin and Chennai. The agency also has 4 referral and 72 local food testing laboratories to test the adulterated foods.
