The Full form of BDS is Bachelor of Dental Surgery. BDS is the educational and professional programme in the field of dental surgery in India. It is the most designated degree of dentists. It is a medical field of surgery related to mouth and addressing the problems related to teeth, gums and jaws of human beings. It is a five year undergraduate degree program for the students who want to make their career in dentistry and as a dental surgeon. The duration of this course is of five years which consists of four year training and one year compulsory internship. Besides treating tooth decay only, BDS course also gives emphasis on denture, surgery and multiple dental problems. The students who have passed the 12th examination in science stream with physics, chemistry and biology as the subjects are eligible to apply for this course. These students have to clear the BDS entrance exam that can be at the state level or national level. These entrance tests are conducted by various colleges and universities across the country that offer BDS course. The subjects of BDS course includes Orthodontics, Materials used in Dentistry, Human Physiology, Oral Pathology and Oral Microbiology, Human Oral Anatomy, Histology and Tooth Morphology and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
