Govt. offers numerous scholarships scheme to attract students in Research Field – The Human Resource Development Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ recently announced that the Indian Govt has been running numerous research fellowship schemes in recent years to attract meritorious students in the field of research.

Currently the most sought out after academic programmes in the Indian premier institutes such as the Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) and National Institute of Technologies (NITs) are the undergraduate programmes (B.Tech) offered by them. However very less percentages of students choose to pursue research field after completing B.Tech in their respective fields.
To attract the students in the field of research, the Govt of India (GoI) launched Prime Minister Research Fellowship (PMRF) Scheme. Under this programme, the meritorious students are granted direct admission into IITs, Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) and Indian Institute of Science. These students will be awarded the scholarship amount of Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per month. Apart from that, a few selected students also get a research grant of Rs 2 lakh per year for a period of five years in order to present their respective papers.
Certain such schemes have been further modified and opened to students in other institutions as well.
For other Fellowship programmes such as Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), PhDs, etc. the rates have been increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 31,000 per month and from Rs 28, 000 to Rs 35, 000 per month. It got effective from January 1, 2019. Apart from that the students who are currently pursuing their M.Tech from Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTI) and those affiliated by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), they are getting monthly fellowship amount of Rs 12, 400.
The Dept of Science and Technology has also revised the rates of amount given to the research associates from Rs 36, 000 per month to Rs 47, 000 per month. Rs 38, 000 to Rs 49, 000 per month and from Rs 40, 000 to Rs 54, 000 per month according to the eligibility.
