NEET made mandatory for Students willing to study MBBS abroad
NEET mandatory for pursuing MBBS course abroad – The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has now been made mandatory for pursuing MBBS or to study medicine abroad. Regulations of Medical Council of India (MCI) has amended by the Delhi High Court. In accordance with the verdict, from year 2019, it is now mandatory for the students to first clear NEET to pursue their studies of medicine abroad. Furthermore, the court said that the license to study medicine abroad would not be provided to the students if they fail to qualify NEET 2019. This order was made when a batch of petitions challenged the amendments made by MCI in the Foreign Medical Institute Regulations, 2002 and the Screening Test Regulations, 2002.
The bench of Justices A K Chawla and S Ravindra Bhatt said, “The court is of the opinion that the MCI’s amended regulations, mandating that those desirous of studying abroad, had to appear and qualify NEET had a direct nexus with quality of professionals – or many who would – wish to practice the medical profession and seek enrolment in the State Register, for that purpose. It is now essential that everyone wishing to secure admission to any medical institute in India has to appear and clear the NEET. Such a requirement is neither unreasonable nor arbitrary.”

Earlier, the students who wish to pursue medical education abroad had to qualify the screening test called Foreign Medical Graduates Exam, for registration to practice in India after acquiring the primary medical qualification overseas.
At present, one who wishes to study medicine in any medical institute of India has to clear the NEET.
