Character Sketch of Seibei

Seibei is a 12-year-old boy with a love of collecting gourds. He lives in a harbour town and enjoys exploring the markets and alleyways of the town in search of gourds of all shapes and sizes that appeal to him. He is a careful, thoughtful, and deliberate person; he prepares and polishes his gourds like they’re treasure! And while it is clear he is drawing on some artistic impulses, he is not an artist who thinks about or makes expensive or brand-name things – he takes great pleasure in transforming everyday things into special, beautiful items. Obviously, there is a lot going on when it comes to Seibei’s response to those in authority who criticise and punish him if he engages in his interest, but at the same time, he persists – again, a testament to his resilience and his exploration of his art form.

Character Sketch of Seibei’s Father

Seibei’s father is a diligent carpenter who possesses traditional views on success and propriety. He is a realist who believes in unimaginative norms, like education to work positions of respectability. Disapproving of Seibei’s unconventional hobby, he views it as a distraction from studies and a possible embarrassment. Given his stern and punitive personality, we can see Seibei’s father’s response as a form of personal attack on him ( out of his concern for his son). When he hears about his son’s behaviour, he essentially explodes and then destroys Seibei’s gourd collection. His reaction clearly shows his concerns for social norms and wanting his son to follow acceptable behaviour.

Character Sketch of Seibei’s Father’s Friend

Seibei’s father’s friend is described as someone who holds many of the same traditional perspectives as Seibei’s father. During his conversation about collecting gourds, he stresses the importance of a collection containing specimens that are unique and unusual. He reflects a traditional perspective of prioritising rarity and value over commonality, supporting his comments with examples. His remarks serve to indirectly criticise Seibei’s interests in common gourds (as opposed to rare specimens), highlighting the generation gap between these men’s values of art and worthiness. Although he does not act as a blatant antagonist, his comments contribute to the pressure Seibei feels to abandon his unique interests.
