Establishment
The English and Foreign Languages University was established by an Act of the Indian Parliament on 3 August 2007. As far as Central Universities go, we are the new kid on the block, but as an educational institution, we have been part of the Indian landscape for 50 years. In our old avatar, we were the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, often abbreviated to ‘CIEFL’. As our new name, ‘EFL’, is contained in the old CIEFL, it should come as no surprise that we intend to build on the achievements of the institute.
The Central Institute of English was the brainchild of the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. CIE, as it was called then, was set up in 1958 in Hyderabad to train teachers of English. In April 1972, the Institute broadened its scope to include the major foreign languages, and was renamed the Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages. CIE became CIEFL, and in July 1973 in recognition of its high standards of excellence, the University Grants Commission accorded the Institute the status of a deemed university.

Non-Formal Courses
In addition to its regular academic programmes, EFL University also offers the following part- time courses and Training Programmes in English.
I. 160 Hour Basic Proficiency Course in English
This programme is meant for anyone who has a working knowledge of English and wishes to improve on his/her existing skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Classes for this programme are usually held early in the morning (7-9 am) or late in the evening (6-8 pm). Two such Proficiency courses are run every year.
The details of the programme are given below.
(i) Programme 1: 1 January – 30 April
(ii) Programme 2: 15July – 15 November
II. 80-hour Advanced Proficiency Course in English
This course is meant for people who have completed the 160-Hour Proficiency Course or for those whose English is reasonably good. Two programmes will be on offer each year.
(i) Programme I: January 15 – March 15 every year
(ii) Programme II: July 15 to September 15 every year
III. One-month proficiency Courses in English
IV.A. Short-duration courses in Spoken English are also offered depending upon the demand.

Distance Education
CIEFL (now EFL University) was one of the first institutions in the country to start distance mode education. Besides two teacher-training programmes, Post-Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of English (PGCTE) and Post-Graduate Diploma in the Teaching of English (PGDTE), the university also offers research level programmes (M. Phil and Ph. D) through the distance mode in the areas of English Literature, English Language Education, and Linguistics and Phonetics.
Compulsory contact programmes are a feature of all the distance – mode programmes offered by the university. They are held at Hyderabad and sometimes at other places too within India. Apart from the final evaluation, all the programmes also have internal assessment, which is based on the assignments you are required to do during the programme. The number of assignments and the period of the contact programme vary from programme to programme.
Admission Process
Admission is any course would be made on the basis of candidate’s performance in the admission test; if and where, no test in conducted, admission would be made on the basis of aggregate total marks secured by the candidate in / at the qualifying examination and marks obtained by the candidate in eligibility subject
