Establishment

The seed for the establishment and growth of TANUVAS was sown as early as 1876, when the Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The institute attained the status of a college in the year 1903 (01.10.1903), when it started functioning at Dobbin Hall, Chennai and admitted 20 students for a three-year diploma course called GMVC (Graduate of Madras Veterinary College).

Admission Process

Eligibility Criteria For M.V.Sc. / M.F.Sc. Degree Courses
Candidates possessing a B.V.Sc. & A.H., / B.F.Sc. degree of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University or any other University recognized as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to apply.
Only 75% of the admission strength for the year is available for the candidates from Tamil Nadu (the remaining 25% is reserved for candidates from other states through ICAR). If there are any unfilled seats under the state quota, the same will be filled with candidates from other states who have applied and appeared for the entrance examination conducted by the University.
Candidates who have studied under conventional system should possess a minimum of 55% marks. Candidates with an OGPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 under trimester system or 7.0 out of 10.0 or 70% aggregate under semester pattern alone are eligible to apply for admission to M.V.Sc./M.F.Sc. degree programme. Candidates who have passed B.V.Sc. & A.H., degree under the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) regulations should have obtained a minimum of 55% marks. For SC/ST candidates a minimum pass is sufficient.

Eligibility Criteria For Ph.D. Degree Programme
Candidates with an OGPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 under trimester system or 7.0 out of 10.0 under semester system or 70% aggregate in their Master’s degree alone are eligible to apply for admission to Ph.D. degree programme in Veterinary and Fisheries Sciences. For SC/ST candidates a minimum pass is enough.
Only 75% of the admission strength for the year is available for the candidates from Tamil Nadu. The remaining 25% is reserved for candidates from other states. If there are any unfilled seats under State Quota, the same will be filled up with candidates of other states. All candidates should apply and appear for the entrance examination conducted by the university.

(a) Veterinary and Animal Sciences
Candidates with basic B.V.Sc. & A.H., degree and Master’s degree in the concerned field of specialization from a recognized University shall alone be eligible to apply (except Animal Biotechnology).
Animal Biotechnology :- Candidates with M.V.Sc., degree course in any field of specialization (except Animal Husbandry Economics, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Animal Husbandry Statistics) or M.Sc., degree in Biotechnology with basic B.V.Sc. & A.H., degree recognized as equivalent thereto shall be eligible.

(b) Fisheries Science
Candidates with basic B.F.Sc. degree and Master’s degree in Fisheries Science or any other degree recognized as equivalent thereto shall be eligible to apply.

Eligibility Criteria For M. Phil In Biotechnology
A candidate with Masters degree in Science in the disciplines of Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Gene Technology, Animal Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Genetics, Marine Biology and Fisheries Sciences (except Fisheries Economics and Fisheries Extension) from a recognized university or any other degree recognized as equivalent thereto shall apply.

Candidates with an OGPA of 2.50 out of 4.00 under trimester system or 6.0 out of 10.0 under semester system or 60% aggregate in Masters degree shall alone apply. For SC/ST candidates a minimum pass is sufficient

Eligibility Criteria For Post Graduate Diploma In Bioinformatics
A graduate with any one of the following qualifications: B.V.Sc. & A.H., B.F.Sc., B.Sc.(Agri.), B.Sc.(Horti.), B.E., B.Tech., M.B.B.S., B.D.S., M.Sc., MCA or postgraduate degree with Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biotechnology / Biophysics / Botany / Zoology / Biology/ Biochemistry / Microbiology / Pharmacology / Computer Science/ Statistics of any recognized University with OGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 in trimester system or 7.0 out of 10.0 in semester system or 50% in conventional system. A minimum pass is sufficient for SC/ ST candidates. Admissions open to other state candidates also.
