The Institute will provide facilities for instructions in all Engineering Departments at postgraduate level with more emphasis on research content, leading to the degree of Master of Technology by Research, M. Tech. (Res).
The M. Tech (Res) programmes are being offered by all of the Departments/ Centres of the Institute.

M.Tech (2 years - 4 Semesters)
he candidates should have B.E./B.Tech or equivalent degree in the relevant discipline with not less than 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in the qualifying examination. There is no relaxation in academic requirement for any category / caste of candidates.
The candidates appearing B.E. / B.Tech (final semester) examination may also apply for the above course. However, they have to produce their marksheet showing 60% marks in aggregate latest by 30th September, 2006, failing which their admission will stand cancelled.
For admission to the following programmes the specifying degrees are mentioned against each:
a) Computer Science : Degree in any branch of Engineering or MCA with GATE score in Computer Science.
b) Metallurgical & Materials Engineering: Degree in Metallurgy, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or M.Sc. in Physics or Chemistry.
c) Ceramic Engineering: B.Tech./B.E. in Ceramic Engineering / Chemical Technology / Metallurgical Engineering / Metallurgical & Materials Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Electrical Science OR M.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry / Material Science.
In case a course does not get enough students to make the course viable, the students admitted to that course will be transferred to other courses according to the student’s preference given in his application form.
Except for sponsored candidates, selection is strictly based on GATE percentile. In case GATE qualified candidates are not available admission may be given to other candidates on the basis of selection based on marks in qualifying degree and a written and /or oral examination. Only GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship.
Persons employed in other organizations (institutions/industries/research organizations) can be considered under sponsored category provided they satisfy the same qualification norms as above and have a total of minimum two years full time experience in the sponsoring organization. They have to apply in prescribed form through their employers with suitable endorsement. All sponsored candidates satisfying the above criteria will be called for interview. They are advised to come with experience certificate and other relevant documents such as pay-slip, appointment order & I.D. card. The percentage marks requirement for sponsored candidates may be relaxed by Senate up to 55% or CGPA 6.0 if documentary evidence of proven research & professional experience are submitted.
B.Sc. with the subject applied for as one of the subjects (pass or Honours) . Mathematics in +2 level is compulsory. Admission to the programme will be made through an Entrance Examination to be conducted by the Institute on 03.07.2006 (Monday) and career marking as decided by the Institute. Candidates appearing B.Sc. final Examination may also apply for the above programme in due date, however they are required to submit their mark sheet at the time of Entrance Examination.
A candidate who has passed the final examination for the Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Technology or Medicine or the Master’s degree in Science including Mathematics and Statistics or Humanities/Social Sciences or a degree equivalent to any of them from recognized University obtaining at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in the case of Engineering/ Science subjects and 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA in the case of Humanities/ Social Sciences/ Medicine subject, shall be eligible for admission to the programme.
B.E./ B.Tech. / M.Sc. in relevant discipline with minimum 65% marks in aggregate or 7.0CGPA.
M.E./M.Tech. in relevant discipline with at least 60 percent marks in aggregate (or 6.5 CGPA) at both B.Tech./(or M.Sc.) and M.Tech. levels.
(There is no relaxation in academic requirement for SC/ST/Handicapped students)
In special cases students of one discipline may seek admission in a related department which will be considered on the basis of merit of the case. Selection will be made on the basis of academic record, relevance of qualification, candidate’s research interest, existing research prorgammes of the departments and performance in tests and interviews.
Sponsored candidates: The Institute welcomes candidates from reputed academic and R & D Institutions, as well as from Government and Industry. Sponsored candidates can work full time in the Institute or at their place of work after satisfying residential requirements, if facilities exist. Sponsored candidates must have completed at least two years continuous service in the sponsoring organistion, which must be an institution of repute employing good number of engineering / science professionals. Sponsored students are expected to serve their sponsoring organization of completion of their degree in NIT, at least 2 years with M.Tech. and 3 years with Ph.D.
