It was in this setting that the Government of India invited the renowned design team of Charles and Ray Eames to recommend a programme of design to serve as an aid to small industry. On the basis of their remarkable document, ‘The India Report’, the Government of India set up the National Institute of Design in 1961 as an autonomous national institution for research, service and training in Industrial Design and Visual Communication.

Admission Process

All candidates fulfilling the requirements of minimum qualification and within the prescribed age limit will be called for the Entrance Test (DAT or NEED) to be conducted at 12 centres — Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Oman.
(NID reserves its right to cancel any of these centres).

The second phase of the admission procedure will consist of studio tests followed by personal interviews at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Gandhinagar.

The Admission Committee decides the procedures, grades and weightage every year. The norms for the selection are the sole prerogative of the Admission Committee and the decision of the Admission Committee and the Management in any of the matters concerning the admission process and selection will be final. Any direct or indirect attempt to influence the admission committee or its members, academic office bearers or management will lead to the automatic disqualification of the candidate(s).

Prescribed percentage of seats are reserved for candidates belonging to various reserved categories scheduled as per the norms of the Government of India. The OBC reservation is in effect in stages and the new academic year 2009-2010 envisages the second stage of reservation.

National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED)
NEED is a qualifying examination of the following consortium partner institutions for admission to the undergraduate level programmes in design:

National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad
D. J. Academy of Design, Coimbatore
IILM School of Design, Gurgaon
Wigan & Leigh College, New Delhi
Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi

NEED is conducted by the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, as a nodal agency on behalf of the consortium partners.

The objective of NEED is to measure the candidate’s aptitude for the field of design involving general mental ability, worldview, sensitivity to environment, creativity, drawing and communication skills.

NEED is only a qualifying entrance examination and therefore does not guarantee admission in any way, or in any of the consortium partner institutions.

For candidates applying for NID:
Based on NEED score candidates will be short listed and called directly for next phase of admission — studio tests and personal interviews — for final selection. Candidates need not apply to NID again for the second and third stages.

For candidates applying to consortium partner institutes:
Based on the NEED scores candidates have to apply separately to each consortium partner institute for admission and may have to fulfill its specific requirements for admission in the next phase.

NID is not responsible for the admission procedures of the consortium partner institutes.

For more details or any specific queries on admissions or academic programmes of consortium partner institutions, candidates may directly contact the concerned institutes.
