Establishment
National Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) , an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act was established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. NIT Silchar is situated on the banks of river Barak. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College(REC).
NIT Silchar was ranked 24 and 14 for the year 2005 and 2007 respectively among Indias Top T schools by DataQuest.
In Infrastructure parameter , NIT silchar comes in 2nd place among all NITs only after NIT Trichy. This is also according to DQ ratings. The institute has undergone rapid and radical transformattion in its Infrastructure and Academic facilities during the last 4 years since its upgradation to NIT.
