The college came into existence in 1900 and is an autonomous institution. The college has always occupied a top slot among the list of best private medical colleges in India for MBBS. The college has also been known for its Medical establishments in India such as performing the first bone marrow transplant in 1986, first kidney transplant in 1971, first open heart surgery in 1961 among others.

Its campus is both Rural and Urban & is spread across 200 acres. Peter John Victor is the current Director of the Institute. Popularly known as CMC, it is affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University which is based in Chennai. The college has 100 seats for the course of MBBS.
