UPSC Indian Economic Service Examination 2021 Notification

UPSC IES 2021 – Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification for Indian Economic Service (IES) Examination 2021. This year UPSC has released 215 vacancies for the IES 2021 Recruitment. Interested and eligible candidates can apply for the positions on or before 07th April 2021

  • Candidates are required to qualify all three stages of the UPSC IES 2021 exam. There will be a Preliminary exam, Mains exam and a Personality test. All these three tests/stages will be qualifying in nature. Recruitment will be done for the following categories for Group A/B posts:
  • Category I – Civil Engineering
  • Category II – Mechanical Engineering
  • Category III – Electrical Engineering
  • Category IV – Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC IES 2021


  • A candidate must be either: (a) a citizen of India; or (b) a subject of Nepal; or (c) a subject of Bhutan; or (d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India, before the 1st January, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India; or (e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India
  • Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) & (e) above shall be person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.

Age Limit

  • A candidate for this examination must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on the 1st January, 2021 i.e., he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1991 and not later than 1st January, 2000.
  • The upper age‐limit of 30 years will be relaxable upto 35 years in the case of Government servants of the following categories, if they are employed in a Department/ Office under the control of any of the authorities mentioned in column 1 below and apply for admission to the examination for all or any of the Service(s)/Post(s) mentioned in column 2, for which they are otherwise eligible.

Age Relaxation

  • The upper age-limit prescribed above will be relaxable:
  • Up to a maximum of 5 years if a candidate belongs to a SC/ST;
  • Up to a maximum of 3 years in the case of candidate belonging to OBC who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates;
  • Up to a maximum of 5 years if a candidate has ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu and Kashmir during
  • Up to a maximum of 3 years in the case of Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country.
  • Up to a maximum of 5 years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 01st January 2021
  • Up to a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and orthopedically disabled persons

Minimum Educational

  • A candidate for the IES must have obtained a Postgraduate Degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/ Econometrics from a University incorporated by of an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutes established by an Act Parliament or declared to be deemed as University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or a Foreign University approved by the Central Govt. from time to time.
  • Note-I: A candidate, who has appeared at an exam the passing of which would render them eligible to appear at this exam, but has not been informed of the result, may apply for admission to the exam. A candidate who intends to appear at such a qualifying exam may also apply
  • Note-II: In exceptional cases, the UPSC may treat a candidate, who has none of the foregoing qualification, as a qualified candidate provided that he/she has passed exams conducted by other institutions the standard of which in the opinion of the Commission, justifies his/her admission to the exam.
  • Note-III: A candidate who is otherwise qualified but who has taken a degree from a Foreign University may also apply to the Commission and may be admitted to the exam at the discretion of the Commission

  • The applicants who are submitting multiple applications should note that only the applications with higher RID (Registration ID) shall be entertained by the Commission and fees paid against one RID shall not be adjusted against any other RID.
  • All the applicants are required to provide valid and active email id and mobile numbers while filling up online application forms as the Commission will be using electronic mode for communication.

Application Fee

  • Candidates are required to pay a fee of Rs.200/- either by remitting the money in any Branch of State Bank of India or by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card or by using Internet Banking of SBI.
  • Female/SC/ST/Persons with Benchmark Disability Candidates are exempted from payment of a fee.

Selection Process

  • The candidates will be selected for the UPSC IES Recruitment based on written test viva voce test. Candidates need to qualify both the examinations. The merit list is being prepared from the scores which are secured in the exams.

  • Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Engineering Services Examination, 2021 as per guidelines given in Appendix‐II of the Rules for the Engineering Services Examination, 2021 published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 07.04.2021
