The Full form of GNM is General Nursing and Midwifery. GNM deals with the education of nurses in general health care, nursing, and midwifery. GNM is a three and half year diploma course and is meant to impart knowledge and to prepare general nurses who can efficiently perform as members of the health or medical team and capable of dealing the competencies in both the hospitals and other such organizations.

The minimum educational qualification required for GNM course is 12th passed with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects with aggregate of 45 % marks. The age limit is minimum 17 years and maximum 30 years.

The first year of the course curriculum includes the study of Anatomy & Physiology, Behavioural Science, Fundamentals of Nursing and Community Health Nursing, the second Year consists of Medical Surgical Nursing I (including Pharmacology), Medical Surgical Nursing I (including Pharmacology), Medical Surgical Nursing II (Specialities), Mental Health & Psychiatric Nursing and Computer Education and the final year includes the study of Midwifery and Gynaecology, Community Health Nursing II and Paediatric Nursing.

GNM graduates can work as a Home Nurse, Staff Nurse, Health Visitor & Community Health Worker. GNM graduate have great scope not only in India but also in abroad.
