There are 6, 83,000 posts vacant in different central government departments as it was informed in the Lok Sabha. Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that out of the total of 38,02,779 sanctioned strength, only 31,18,956 employees are currently on their positions as on March 1, 2018. This information was based on the annual report of the pay and research unit of the department of expenditure.

The minister said that there were 6, 83,823 posts lying vacant as on 1st March 2018.

As per the statement given by the minister “Vacancies in the central government are caused due to retirement, resignation, death, promotion etc. and the posts falling vacant are required to be filled as per recruitment rules by the concerned ministries/departments/ organizations”.

He further stated that filling up of vacant posts is a continuous process depending upon the staff requirement in different ministries/departments during the year. During the current year 2019-20, three top recruiting agencies namely, UPSC, SSC and Railway Recruitment Board recommended to hire staff for 134000 posts.

The reply by the minister also stated that the highest recommendation of 1,16,391 was made by the RRB, 19,995 by  SSC and 4,399 by UPSC. Apart from this recruiting agencies such as SSC, RRB, Postal Service board and Ministry of Defence are also working for the filling up of 3,10,832 vacant posts including 27,652 vacant posts of defence civilians.

The reply further states that all ministries/departments have been requested to fill all the existing vacancies in various departments/ministries in set time-bound period. 

It also said that the recruiting agencies are now days conducting computer based tests, in order to reduce the recruitment cycle. Even interviews for non gazetted posts are also discontinued.
