The CBSE 2026-27 changes start this academic year, with a mandatory third language in Class 6 and a new scheme for Class 9. Most of the bigger shifts, including new exam patterns, arrive later, in 2028 and 2029. Here is what applies to your class today and what is still ahead.
Key Facts
- The new curriculum was launched on April 2, 2026, with a phased rollout from the 2026-27 session (Business Standard).
- Class 6 students begin a mandatory third language (R3) in 2026-27.
- Computational thinking and AI become compulsory in Class 9 from 2027-28, with the first board exams in 2029, as reported by Business Standard.
- CBSE released Class 10 and 12 sample papers for 2026-27 on September 21, 2026 (Shiksha).
What Changes for Class 6: A Third Language
Class 6 students must study three languages from 2026-27. At least two must be Indian languages, and English can count as the third if two Indian languages are already being studied, according to a school-side explainer (Sunbeam World School). Full board-exam implementation of the rule comes years later, in 2031 by that account.
For Class 9, revised textbooks in the language scheme are also being introduced, and Maithili, Santhali, Dogri and Konkani have been added, per Business Standard.
What Changes for Class 9
Class 9 gets the new scheme this year. Compulsory areas include art education, physical education and wellbeing, vocational education and interdisciplinary studies. Students can also opt for advanced Maths and Science tracks, assessed through one-hour supplementary exams (Business Standard).
Vocational education
Vocational education becomes compulsory for Classes 9 and 10, with board exams on it from 2027-28, according to the Sunbeam summary. Another explainer says Classes 6 to 10; schools should confirm the exact range in CBSE circulars.
Exam pattern
From 2028, about half of board questions are expected to be competency-based, such as case studies and application questions, per the same school explainer. That means understanding will be tested more than recall.
Where AI Fits In
AI learning starts early but the exam impact is distant. Classes 3 to 8 have a computational thinking and AI curriculum, it becomes compulsory in Class 9 from 2027-28, and AI turns into a board-examined subject in 2029. If you want the background on the Class 3 start, see our earlier article on India’s AI curriculum.
Sample Papers Are Already Out
Sample papers for Classes 10 and 12 were released on September 21, 2026, with marking schemes (Shiksha). Download them from the CBSE academic website and treat them as the best guide to the paper style. Third-party sites often repackage them, so use the official source.
A Quick Checklist
- Class 6 parents: ask the school which language is the third and when it begins.
- Class 9 students: check which vocational and wellbeing subjects your school offers and whether the advanced track is available.
- Class 10 and 12 students: solve the official sample papers under timed conditions.
- Everyone: read the original CBSE circulars, since explainers disagree on some details.
