Character Sketch of the Three Witches

The Witches are the ‘Secret, Black, and Midnight Hags’ who control the eerie atmosphere of the scene. They spend the first half of the scene brewing a disgusting potion in a cauldron to summon powerful spirits. Unlike their earlier meetings with Macbeth, where they seemed to just happen upon him, here they are prepared and intentional. They act as ‘equivocators’, meaning they tell Macbeth the truth but in a way that is designed to trick him. Their goal is to lead Macbeth further into evil by making him feel overconfident and invincible.

Character Sketch of Macbeth

Macbeth is now a desperate and cold-hearted king who has lost his moral compass. He is no longer afraid of the witches; instead, he commands them to answer him, showing how much his ego has grown. He is terrified of losing his power, which is why he is so obsessed with Banquo’s descendants and Macduff. By the end of the scene, Macbeth undergoes a major change: he decides to stop thinking before he acts. His decision to murder Macduff’s innocent family shows that he has completely transformed from a noble soldier into a heartless tyrant.

Character Sketch of the Apparitions

The Apparitions are three supernatural spirits summoned by the witches to deliver prophecies. The First Apparition i.e. an armed head represents the threat of Macduff. The Second Apparition i.e. a bloody child represents the idea that ‘none of woman born’ can hurt Macbeth, which he mistakenly thinks means he is immortal. The Third Apparition i.e. a crowned child holding a tree represents Malcolm and the moving of Birnam Wood. These characters are important because they give Macbeth the false security that leads to his eventual death.

Character Sketch of Hecate

Hecate is the goddess of witchcraft and the boss of the three witches. She appears briefly to praise the witches for the hell-broth they have created. Her presence shows that the evil happening in the cave is organized and powerful. She adds to the ritualistic feeling of the scene by encouraging the witches to sing and dance like elves and fairies in a ring, making the dark magic feel both festive and terrifying.

Character Sketch of Lennox

Lennox is a Scottish nobleman who enters at the very end of the scene. He does not see the witches or the ghosts, which highlights the fact that the supernatural visions were meant only for Macbeth. Lennox serves as a messenger, bringing the news that Macduff has fled to England. His arrival is the trigger that causes Macbeth to stop talking and start acting, leading directly to the plan to attack Macduff’s castle.

Character Sketch of the Ghost of Banquo and the Eight Kings

Although they do not speak, these characters represent Macbeth’s greatest fear: a legacy that does not belong to him. The Eight Kings represent the future line of Scottish rulers, and the last one carries a mirror showing even more kings to follow. The Ghost of Banquo follows them, smiling at Macbeth and pointing at the kings as his own children. This silent parade breaks Macbeth’s spirit because it proves that all his murders were for nothing, his own bloodline will not keep the throne.
