Macbeth has completely changed from the loyal soldier he once was. He is now a man consumed by anxiety and ‘scorpions of the mind’. He is unable to sleep and is deeply jealous of the dead King Duncan because Duncan is at peace while Macbeth is tortured by guilt. Unlike the first act, where he needed his wife to push him into action, Macbeth is now taking charge. He has become more secretive and cold, planning more murders without even asking for his wife’s advice or help.

Character Sketch of Lady Macbeth
This scene shows a much more vulnerable side of Lady Macbeth. Earlier in the play, she was the cold, calculating leader, but now she is quietly falling apart. When she is alone, she admits that being Queen hasn’t made her happy because she is constantly living in fear. However, the moment her husband enters the room, she hides her own sadness to act as his support system. She tries to be the strong one by telling him to stop worrying about the past, but her private thoughts show that she is just as haunted as he is.
