Datta, the main character of the story The Gold Frame, is a simple, hardworking frame-maker who runs a small shop called The Modern Frame Works. He takes great pride in his work but is easily worried and nervous, especially when dealing with demanding customers. Although honest by nature, Datta is pushed into making a desperate and dishonest choice when he accidentally damages a precious photograph. He anxiously replaces it with another, fearing severe consequences. His exaggerated worries and vivid imagination bring humor to the story. Datta’s character showcases the struggles of an ordinary man who, despite good intentions, sometimes gives in to fear and helplessness, making him both relatable and sympathetic.

The customer in the lesson is a tall, rustic-looking man who is deeply devoted to the photograph he brings to Datta. He treats it with great respect, suggesting it is a portrait of someone he admires or worships.
