Character Sketch of Tarapada

Tarapada is the central character, a young Brahmin boy around fifteen or sixteen years old. He is remarkably handsome with fair skin and graceful features, almost like a sculpted figure. His most defining trait is his innate wanderlust; he cannot be tied down by people, places, or emotional bonds, always seeking freedom. Despite his wandering life, he remains pure and uncorrupted by worldliness, maintaining a natural innocence. He is highly talented and adaptable, quickly learning various skills like cooking, weaving, pottery, and especially music. He plays the flute beautifully and is a skilled singer of panchalis and jatra songs. Tarapada is charming and easily makes friends, but he is also detached, leaving without a word when relationships grow too close. He possesses a deep curiosity, which drives him to learn new things, like English. Although he feels a new, powerful attraction towards Charushashi, his fundamental need for absolute freedom ultimately leads him to disappear before he can be bound by marriage.

Character Sketch of Motilal Babu

Motilal Babu is the kind and practical landlord of Kathaliya. He is initially portrayed as a generous host, inviting Tarapada to eat with his family and later offering him a home. He is impressed by talent and intellect, taking a liking to Tarapada’s skills and eagerly arranging for him to learn English. Motilal Babu is also concerned with social standing and tradition, which is why he initially hesitates about marrying his only daughter, Charushashi, to Tarapada due to his unknown family background. However, he is also flexible and loving as a father, eventually agreeing to the marriage when he sees his daughter’s strong preference and considers her difficult nature, which might not be accepted by other families. He is largely a supportive and benevolent figure, though somewhat traditional.

Despite her overt hostility and fiery nature, she is secretly attracted to Tarapada, especially when he swims, though she tries to hide this interest. Her actions demonstrate a struggle between her desire to control and her growing feelings.
