Philip is the main character in the story. He is the son of a Marine Band musician and is deeply inspired by music from an early age. He is talented, quick to learn, especially when it comes to playing the violin. Even though Sousa was distracted with things like baseball and almost joining a circus band when he was younger, his passion for music pulled him back where he belonged. It’s a story of how he changed from a carefree kid to a musician with goals. He learned a lot from messing up and working hard. Sousa became the leader of the U.S. Marine Band and a well-known composer around the world because he didn’t give up.

Character Sketch of Mr. Sousa (A Supportive Father)

Mr. Sousa, the father of Philip, is shown as a calm, understanding, and intelligent father. He is a musician in the U.S. Marine Band and serves as a strong inspiration for his son. Unlike strict or forceful parents, Mr. Sousa believes in allowing his son to learn from his own experiences. When Philip tells him he wants to become a baker, Mr. Sousa doesn’t scold or stop him. Instead, he arranges for him to work in a real bakery so Philip can see the reality for himself.

Mr. Sousa’s parenting style is wise and gentle. He knows that his son has a natural talent for music, and he patiently waits for him to realize it on his own.  His deep trust in his son’s strength and his soft-spoken guidance make a huge impact on Philip’s life. Character Sketch of Professor Esputa (Music Teacher)

Professor Esputa is Philip’s music teacher at school. He is shown as a strict, passionate, and slightly short-tempered man who takes music very seriously. He expects his students, especially talented ones like Philip, to be sincere and focused. When Philip shows up late and unprepared for his violin solo performance, Esputa is disappointed and scolds him badly. He even denies him refreshments after the concert, which deeply hurts Philip. His frustration is understandable because he sees potential in Philip and wants him to treat music with respect. Even with the argument, Philip later realizes the importance of his teacher’s lessons.
