UK Scholarships increased so as to attract Indian students

In the UK, the number of Indian students has decreased in the last few years following a clamp down on the bogus colleges. However, this time, the British govt is wooing students by increasing UK scholarships.

Presently, about 20,000 Indian students were studying in different varsities of the UK. However in 2013, the figure was around 24,000.

Andrew Soper, Minister Counselor (Political and Press) of the British High Commission told reporters that the number of Indian students has come down in comparison to the figures of the past 3-4 years. It is mainly because of the strict check on the bogus colleges. Now, only Bonafide institutes are left for admitting students. The inflow of students from India had stabilized, and an increase is expected gradually.

Under the ‘Great Britain’ campaign, 59 UG and 232 PG scholarships are offered across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Under the flagship Chevening program, the no. of scholarships had increased to near about Rs 25 crore now.

According to Soper, the visa process was also eased with every 9 out of 10 students getting it. If any student got an admission into a UK university, he or she will get a visa. The most popular courses for Indians include management studies and engineering.
